Room size - if applying for german dependent visa

• Currently I'm staying in a single room which is 20 sq. meter , someone said that if i need to get my wife I need to have atleast 40 sq.meter. I'm in a contract now I don't want to break it. So can I get another sigle bed room appartment for my wife & apply for dependent visa.
