Car worries...

  • Has anyone had a problem with theives at car parks at the end of tramping routes? I'm planning on doing the Abel Tasman and probably a few in Fiordland, and any others I stumble across.

I've heard a few tales of woe about returning to empty cars.

However, when I did the Lake Waikeremoana I found a camp site with a secure car park that I could leave my car at for free, is this common throughout the islands?

Break ins are possilbe pretty much anywhere, but much less common in the South Island. generally speaking.

Where I live, outskirts of Auckland, I would normally not want to leave my car overnight. I'd almost expect it to get broken into.

but in Otago, where I used to live, I'd leave my car pretty much anywhere and expect it to be there when I got back.

    Secure carparks are not common.

That said, I've left my car lots of silly places and have never had a problem.

Just make your car look unappealing.. Laughing
