Bus
The bus network in Kuwait is generally cheap and efficient, though don’t expect to be dropped off at any any major visitor attraction, as the network was designed with locals in mind.
The majority of routes are run by the Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) which has services going all over the county, as well as into other Gulf states.
Boat
The KPTC also runs a ferry service to Failaka Island, a popular day trip for locals and tourists alike, which leaves daily from Ras Salmiya.
Car
Driving is the most popular mode of transport in Kuwait. Petrol is cheap and the roads are good, though driving-related deaths are very high so it’s important to be careful. You can use an International Driving Permit at first, though you will eventually have to get a Kuwaiti license.
It’s popular for expats to lease cars from rental firms, as you don’t have the hassle of selling on, and repairs are covered. If you do decide to buy, consider finding another expat who is leaving and selling their car. Check Just Landed’s Kuwait classifieds to find cars for sale.
Getting around Kuwait City
Probably the most convenient way of getting around in Kuwait City is by taxi. Some taxis do have fare metres, though these are rarely used, so always agree a price before setting off. Radio taxis are usually associated with hotels and charge steeper pricer, though you do get an added degree of security.
Much cheaper are the orange street taxis which you can hail just about anywhere. Be prepared for drivers to try and increase your fare, blaming traffic or poor instructions on your part even if you’ve already agreed a price. Stand your ground.
